S.P. 22 Sovana – San Martino sul Fiora a un Km da Sovana – Sovana
The park named “Città del Tufo”, or “City of the Tufa”, in the district area of the town of Sorano, offers visitors the chance to interact with a natural landscape left virtually untouched, with its picturesque forms of tuffaceous reliefs divided by deep valleys, rich in vegetation. The park also comprises the Etruscan necropolis of Sovana and the rock settlements of San Rocco and Vitozza. Regarding the Etruscan period, the most important of these sites is Sovana. Here are fine examples of necropolises with monumental rock tombs, such as that named Hildebrand, after Pope Gregory VII, born in Sovana, the tombs of Pola, Tifone and Sirena, or “Pole”, “Typhoon” and “Mermaid”, numerous “semidado”, or “semi-dice” tombs, open on one side with the other 3 sides buried into a rock wall, and last in order of discovery the tomb of the “Winged Demons”.
