Piazza Garibaldi – Palazzo del Podestà
The Archaeological Museum is housed in Palazzo del Podestà (1225), which overlooks the square of Piazza del Duomo in Massa Marittima. The collection is organized into sections in chronological order starting from the Palaeolithic up to the Etruscan age. The centre-piece of the collection is the prehistoric Aeneolithic stone-statue called “Vado all’Arancio”, a unique relic of this type in the Maremma region. The Etruscan objects mainly come from excavations carried out at the village of Lago dell’Accesa and include kitchen pottery, loom weights, fishing weights and bricks. There are also some funerary objects found in various necropolises, especially pottery (of “Figulina” clay and “Bucchero”), bronze clasps, iron vase-holders and iron and bronze weapons. On the ground floor of the museum is an educational exhibit about prehistory with full-scale reconstructions of a Palaeolithic and a Neolithic cave dwelling. There are also guided tours and educational activities organized by the Cooperativa delle Colline Metallifere [Cooperative of the Metalliferous Hills], in addition to other cultural activities and film projections.
