Archaeological Museum and Vine & Wine Museum - Scansano - Le colline dell'Albegna

Address

Piazza del Pretorio 4 - Centro Storico Scansano

Museum

The Archaeological Museum traces the history of human presence in the Middle Valley of the Albegna river through finds and knowledge from systematic archaeological research in the last thirty years. The exhibition starts from prehistory and arrives at the most significant testimonies of the Etruscan age: the archaic settlements and the fortified centre, named “Ghiaccio Forte”, or “Hard Ice”, of the Hellenistic period. Ghiacco Forte, whose ancient name is unknown, was founded in the fourth century BC near the northern border of the territory of Vulci, on the right side of the Albegna river. The exhibition continues to the Roman age with some reconstructions and images of the Roman villa that was located near the homestead of Aia Nova. The Museo della Vite e del Vino, or Vine and Wine Museum, not only offers information on wines produced in the local area, but also aims to promote local culture and traditions via the theme of this refined product. The museum is divided into different areas to explain the history of production, the vine and wine cycle, traditions and more general information.
