Batignano

The importance of the castle in the Middle Ages was due to the lead and silver mines located in the area towards Montorsaio. In the historic town centre the ruins of the medieval town walls have been preserved and even though the walls were incorporated in other buildings over the centuries, a significant part of them is still recognisable. In particular, two gates of the walls and two square towers can still be seen. The parish church of San Martino, which first appeared in written texts in the XII century, features many architectural elements of the Early Middle Ages, dating back to the late VIII century and originating from Roselle. The porch, located opposite the church, was built with other materials from Roselle: columns, capitals and fragments of big terracotta jars.
