In Massa Marittima a summer in the sign of Ambrogio Lorenzetti

In Massa Marittima (Gr) a summer dedicated to the great art of Ambrogio Lorenzetti, one of the protagonists of Italian painting of the fourteenth century. Every Thursday and Friday in July and August at 10 and 15, (preview for the public on Wednesday 1 July at 10), meeting in front of the Cathedral of San Cerbone in Piazza Garibaldi, will be organized by the Coop. Sociale Zoe in collaboration with the Municipal Administration four weekly guided visits where visitors will be accompanied to discover the works of the Sienese master still present in the museums and monuments of Massa Marittima, a jewel of medieval art that between 1200 and 1300, thanks to its mines, reached the importance of the great centers of Tuscany attracting internationally renowned artists. Among these Ambrogio Lorenzetti who arrived in Massa Marittima around 1330 when the city passed under the Sienese influence and here he made a series of works of which three remain. The most famous is La Maestà, one of the greatest masterpieces of the artist painted around 1335 for the Augustinian hermits of the church of San Pietro all'Orto which depicts the three theological virtues sitting on the steps leading to the throne of the Madonna with the musician angels, saints and prophets. The work is located in the Museum of San Pietro all’Orto, Corso Diaz 36, which also collects works by Giovanni and Andrea Pisano, Sano di Pietro and Stefano di Giovanni known as Sassetta. 

Another painting attributed to the Sienese master is visible in the Cathedral of San Cerbone (XIII century); it is the Annunciation whose part in which the Madonna is depicted is preserved. In the Organ Museum of Santa Cecilia adjacent to the Museum of San Pietro all’Orto, on the other hand, you can admire the fresco of San Cristoforo with the Child Jesus on his shoulders. In addition to the Cathedral and the two museums, a visit to the Fonte dell'Abbondanza with its spectacular frescoes is planned: a symbol of popular and secular art, made in the mid-thirteenth century. The duration of the visits is estimated at around 3 hours. To comply with the anti-Covid-19 health safety protocols, participation is limited to a maximum of 10 people per visit, the use of a mask is mandatory.
