history and purpose
The Amedeo Modigliani Civit Art Gallery in Follonica was founded in 1995 at the will of the population and the Town Council in order to offer suitable housing for the publicly and privately owned collection donated by artists, private citizens and associations. It is located in the renovated historic building, Casa del Popolo, an example of late Liberty architecture dating back to 1922-23, in the heart of the town, very near to the Promenade. The Civic Art Gallery presents a calendar of modern and contemporary art shows, from which the collection increases its number of permanent exhibits thanks to the statute which decrees that each artist presented must donate one of his/her works to the Gallery. The permanent collection contains over 180 works by contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso, Pietro Annigoni, Salvador Dalý, Guglielmo Micheli, Antonio Bueno, Antonio Possenti, Mario Borgiotti, Franco Angeli, Enzo Faraoni, Walter Sabatelli, Evrio Cicalini, Giuliano Giuggioli, Giuseppe Calonaci and Piero Nincheri and has a strong presence of Tuscan artists. The gallery can also access the Pepi collection, one of the richest for Florentine impressionist and verist works, containing over ten thousand painted works and six thousand art volumes and therefore offers the chance to see 19th century Tuscan painting.
